You may have done better in speaking to him about the Catholic theology behind baptism which sees it as a baptism into the three-fold minisrty of Christ as priest, prophet and king.

The Church does still acknowlege prophets alive and well in this day and age. The difficulty with most protestant/Catholic conversations in this area surround underlying definitions. Prophecy for Cathoics is not so much recieeving a 'new word' from God (that Word has been spoken once and for all in Christ) but in calling the People of God to task in how they are living out (or failing to) their faith. Even in the OT, the prohpets were largely the social critics of the day. "you've lost your way", "You've grown blind", "Return to God", those are the words of the prophets both in Scripture, and in our world today. If we think of our own lives, I'm sure there have been many encounters with those who have filled this prophetic role for us, and there may even be times when we answer that call for the benefit of others too.

I like how you spoke about the gift of tongues. So many people pull out that passage of acts without referencing the whole passage which clearly points out that they were spekaing actual languages

Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’

For the expressed purpose of sharing the Good News...not just for the personal benefit, so that a selct individual can have a 'God Expereince'. Again, in this light, every time the Good News is brought to people where they are at, and spoken in a language they can understand, we can be assured that this same Spirit is still at work among us.
